Much of Speranza's food is cultivated in makeshift greenhouses, relying on grow lights and what few locations are still exposed to light from the surfaces. Though Celeste has long south to ramp up food production, the constant threat of even a single failed harvest means she enforces careful rationing of seeds, and diligent conservation of all food produced.
Agricultural research found around The Dam revealed that during the era of Sunrise, a group of ingenuous farmers sought to cultivate a more resilient strain of wheat. Their meticulous research spanned several growing seasons, and involved planting a wide variety of wild seeds in locations of varying drought, salinity, acidity, and exposure to harsh weather.
After several seasons of selective breeding, these cultivation researches attempted to plant their most promising seed strains in the Hydroponic Domes, diligently documenting their progress in digital archives. According to their early results, they had a real hopes of establishing a large-scale, reliable source of nutrition, potentially transforming society in the Rust Belt and beyond.
Their research project seems to have come to an abrupt halt when a violent hailstorm shattered the roof of the hydroponic domes; exposing the delicate seedlings to a cold snap that caused them to wilt within a day. While the research notes are riddled with words of unyielding determination, no more experiments were logged after that day.
While the Hydroponic Domes were never fully patched up; one researcher thought to store away packs of seeds in an old cryogenic vault in Buried City, in hopes that the budding society might one day develop a sheltered enough location to pick up where the cultivation researchers left off.
Though days are still early, Celeste is cautiously optimistic that the Speranza greenhouses may be able to carry the torch of agricultural progress; cultivating resilient strains of food that could one day shield an entire society from famine and demise.
