Gun Parts

Hi! I'm trying to farm enough points on the Discord to easily communicate with you guys.

I removed it when I was making a few other changes at the same time because it didn't meet the same formatting style that the other item pages had established. I meant to reformat it to meet that same style, but I think doing that just kind of fell through the cracks. I see you added it back with the same formatting that I probably would've chosen. Main page navigation icons

Hello, please refrain from touching my uploaded files, while they don't have Icon in the name, they are specifically for the main page. The style guide is a general guideline for general use images which these images are not for. If you wanted to revert my revert, you should have contacted me on my talk page first. The style guide states that icons should contain "Icon" at the start of the file name. There is no exception in the written guideline for main page images or any other category. The distinction between "general use images" and images "specifically for the main page" does not exist in the style guide as written. The style guide was written to standardize article content. The files in question are not general purpose article icons but are assets created specifically for use on the Main Page. Because these files will be part of the site's main page, changes to them should be discussed before being made especially when the said changes affect files uploaded by members of the wiki team (ARC Raiders Wiki:About) for a specific purpose. When I renamed your files, the style guide contained no exception for main page asset uploads. It stated that uploaded icons should contain "Icon" at the start of the file name. I renamed your files to comply with that guideline, as I have done for every icon upload over the past two months.

You replied that the guideline covers general use images, which your files are not. That distinction did not exist in the written guideline at the time. You then edited the style guide to add it mid-dispute, and cited that edit as justification for reverting renames I made before the edit existed.

Editing a shared policy document during an active dispute over that policy is improper regardless of intent. A guideline carries weight because it reflects standing consensus, not because it can be amended to settle the disagreement in front of it. Zorato (talk) 03:52, 2 June 2026 (UTC)

the key word here is "should", it doesn't say "must" which leaves room for wiki team discretion.

Guidelines are maintained by the wiki team, they can be changed to improve wording or add/remove parts where needed by the wiki team. The change wasn't to win a debate, it was to clarify to users what it is meant to intend and to avoid future debates.

Please use the talk page next time if your initial edit is reverted. Overriding a revert to force a change through without prior discussion is what triggers an edit war. Luke (talk) 08:10, 2 June 2026 (UTC)

You are resting this on "should." Look at what that reading costs you.

If "should" is loose enough to let the main page icons skip the prefix, it is loose enough to let any icons skip it, including the ones I renamed. A word that excuses your uploads cannot also bind mine. Read that way, "should" does not settle the dispute in your favor. It means the guideline binds no one. A style guide that can be read around with a single word is not a standard. It is a suggestion with a loophole.

That is the smaller problem. The larger one is that you edited the guideline to clarify it, and "should" is the word you left in. By your own account the edit was made to remove ambiguity and avoid future debates. If "should" carries the discretion you are now claiming, it is the most ambiguous word in the rule, and you had the guideline open and left it standing. An edit cannot be a clarification when it leaves untouched the one word the dispute is about.

So one of two things is true. Either "should" carries real force, in which case it applied to the main page icons the same as any other upload and the renames were correct. Or "should" is as permissive as you are arguing, in which case it is permissive for every editor, not only the wiki team. A rule cannot bind some uploads and excuse others by who made them. Discretion that runs one way is not discretion. It is exemption.

As stated previously, the files in question were created specifically as Main Page assets and uploaded for that purpose by members of the wiki team. The style guide was intended to standardize assets and content used within articles, not assets created for the site's interface or Main Page presentation. The clarification was made to better reflect that existing distinction and avoid future confusion.

The use of "should" in the guideline reflects that it is guidance rather than an absolute requirement. As with many style guidelines, exceptions may exist where there is a specific reason to deviate from the standard. This wording could change in the future, but it's a matter for the wiki team.

Regardless of any disagreement regarding the interpretation of the guideline, once your renaming edits were reverted, the appropriate next step would have been to start a discussion on the relevant talk page rather than restoring your preferred version.

As stated previously, the style guide made no exception for main page icons then, and it makes none now. The icon section of the style guide was a single unaltered sentence for the full life of the document until this dispute: "Icons should contain 'Icon' at the start of the file name." No qualifiers, no scope limitations, no category distinctions of any kind. There is nothing in the page history that predates this dispute and supports the distinction you are describing. The only edit that does is the one you made during it.

A distinction added mid-dispute is not one that existed before it.

In any case, neither version of the style guide holds up. The old wording said icons should contain "Icon" at the start of the file name. The new wording says "general-purpose in-game icons" should. That added two qualifiers without defining either. What "general-purpose" means is not specified. "In-game" sorts icons by whether they appear in the game, which is not stated on the page and not something every editor would know. The exception you are enforcing is behind two vaguer terms than the rule it replaced.

If main page icons warrant an exception, the wording has to say so plainly. The community is better served by a guideline that says exactly what it covers and what it excludes, so that no one has to guess and no future dispute turns on a single word.
